YESTERYEAR

‘Yesteryear’ is a crafted sculptural piece, conceived with the intention of encapsulating the essence of nostalgia and its emotional qualities. It is a 3D structure made from wood, mirrored acrylics, lights, and a selection of curated toys. Through this piece, I aim to embody and explore the concept of nostalgia - not merely as a longing for the past, but as a profound appreciation and curiosity for the richness of hu man experiences. At its core, ‘Yesteryear’ acts as a time capsule in which the audience can view time and space in a unique dimension shaped by the visual cues of familiar objects.

Toys, cherished artifacts of our childhood, are physical remnants that are imbued with innocence, wonder and imagination. As the viewer gazes into the sculptural piece, they will find themselves surrounded by a kaleidoscope of familiar playthings, each one hopefully evoking a memory frozen in time. From the eclectic array of shiny trinkets and old toys, these artifacts act as a portal to the past, inviting one to reconnect and explore such memories.

The infinity mirrors of ‘Yesteryear’ offer a deeper reflection on the nature of nostalgia itself beyond mere sentimentality. Our memories are both infinite and finite, constantly shifting and evolving with the pas sage of time. They are potent recollections that live beyond our current realities and exist within an ex panse that is timeless and limitless. They are fragmented, refracted through the prism of our perception, yet they are vivid through memory and emotion.

‘Yesteryear’ invites participants to interact with the sculpture through personal introspection. By gazing through the mirrors and familiar childhood objects, it is intended for viewers to reminisce on long forgot ten childhood memories. The sculpture is a celebration of the intricate interplay between memory, emotion, and the passage of time by utilizing nostalgia as a personal conduit.
